Just Eliminate The Icky

“Human life has always had a day-side and a night-side, and, inevitably, because of the practical requirements of man’s being in the world, it has always been the day-side that has received the strongest ‘accent of reality’. But the night-side, even if exorcised, was rarely denied. One of the most astonishing consequences of secularization has been just this denial. Modern society has banished the night from consciousness, as far as this is possible…Much more generally, modern society has not only sealed up the old metaphysical questions in practice but has generated philosophical positions that deny the meaningfulness of those questions.”

- Peter Berger

“Dream up butterflies and rainbows…”

Just Eliminate The Icky

The Utopiates are dreaming!

Watch the night-side disappear!

Don’t ask questions…That’s a GOOD thing,

And it’s absolutely clear.

Just dismiss the awful truth, son...

I mean really...Let it go!

Join The Secular Endeavor

Close your eyes...Watch out below!

Speak and see, and hear no evil...

(Line those monkeys up, my friend.)

Just imagine cloudless blues skies

That just never, EVER end!

Think more lollipops and sunshine…

(Tell yourself there is no dark!)

Just imagine there’s no evil

Dwelling inside every heart1.

Make a wish then… Ban the dark side!

Make believe it isn’t there.

Dream up butterflies…then rainbows…

Show the world how much you care!

Chin up, chest out…You da man now!…

Just keep goin’ with the flow!

All we really need is love, man.

(And the Oprah Winfrey Show.)

Just eliminate “The Icky”

From your thinking once for all!

Proudly say: “Sin never has been!”

And then: “HA!...There was no Fall!3

By eliminating Icky

From our minds, we’ll be OK!

We won’t need the Cross at Calv’ry!

We can sidestep Judgment Day!

1 “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956
