Friend, There’s No Way To Escape It

“The recognition of moral truths is an aspect of general revelation. No matter how vigorously people suppress that knowledge, it keeps rising to the surface.”

– Nancy Pearcey (“Finding Truth”)

“There is no escape… If we are to continue to make moral judgments (and whatever we say we shall in fact continue) then we must believe that the conscience of man is not a product of Nature. It can be valid only if it is an offshoot of some absolute moral wisdom, a moral wisdom which exists absolutely “on its own” and is not a product of non-moral, non-rational Nature.

—C.S. Lewis

Friend, There’s No Way To Escape It

Just as tides invade the shoreline,

Just as apples fall from trees,

Moral truth remains relentless…

Though the conscience feints and flees.

Friend, there’s no way to escape it…

Still we dodge both to and fro.

And though Pride keeps on pretending,

Moral Truth won’t let us go.

Just as Light defeats the darkness,

In the end, my friend, it wins.

Though we try to hide (like Adam)

We’ll be called out in the end.

If we’re honest, we’ll admit it…

By the darkness we’re seduced.

If we’re not, we’ll stand as naked…

Before God…..without excuse1.

It’s The Mirror we must look in,

The reflection of what’s true…

Holy Law brought down from Sinai

That’s still judges me and you.

It’s the truth no one can not know …

(Even those who’ve never heard…)

It keeps rising to the surface,

Like the resurrecting Word.
