Here’s the Pointless Point We’re Making

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise….” (1 Corinthians 1:19)

Dr. Steven Weinberg,
Harvard University, physics

"It is almost irresistible for humans to believe that we have some special relation to the universe, that human life is not just a more-or-less farcical outcome of a chain of accidents reaching back to the first three minutes, but that we were somehow built in from the beginning…. It is hard to realize that this all [i.e., life on Earth] is just a tiny part of an overwhelmingly hostile universe. It is even harder to realize that this present universe has evolved from an unspeakably unfamiliar early condition, and faces a future extinction of endless cold or intolerable heat. The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless."
— Steven Weinberg, PhD., physics, Nobel Laureate, ("The First Three Minutes")

It is odd to me that the wise and learned intelligentsia class will put their stamp of approval on a statement like the Weinberg statement above and call it an acceptable "scientific" conclusion based on fact, and then turn right around and ridicule other scientists who claim that there is evidence that the universe and life in it is "intelligently designed". And then even more odd that the intelligentsia class would audaciously declare that even to suggest intelligent design in the science classroom is something that must be prevented, stamped out and eradicated.

When philosophical ideology trumps the honest pursuit of truth, things will not end well.

In light of that, I am particularly intrigued by Dr. Weinberg’s telling phrase “almost irresistible” in the first sentence of his statement above. If you listen closely, you may be able to hear him muttering defiantly under his very next breath:

“But I can.... I CAN…I WILL !

Such is the proud and foolish nature of fallen man and the nature of Original Sin: blind, inherent, defiance before God.

Here’s the Pointless Point We’re Making

Son, you simply must resist it…
All this talk that you’re unique!
You’re an accident….. That’s final!
UN-designed…Your future bleak.

Life’s a farce, boy,…you included!
There’s no reason and no rhyme.
Science says so…We’re not lyin’…
And that's just the “Bottom Line”

Don't you see, the point we're making?
There's no point, young man, at all.
We've got all the facts to prove it....
Calculations on the wall.

It’s a Physics-thing, young fella…
So, it’s WAY above your head!
But the power point we’re stressing:
There ain’t nuthin’ when you’re dead.

Look, the world is bleak and hostile,
With Extinction in the end…
All your hopes and dreams?....Illusion.
Truth and Justice?...Just pretend.

There's no point in your disputing...
(We're "The Scientists", you see.)
There's no reason, son, to doubt us.
And some day you WILL agree.

We've looked at the Laws of Nature,
And they point to just one fact:
There’s no Reason behind reason...
(Trust us, boy,…..We are not quacks!)

Look, it’s pointless now to argue.
Don’t resist the point we’ve made.
If you think that there is “meaning” ,
Kid, you’ll never make the grade!

There's no "Bottom Line", no Purpose,
Only darkness..., endless night.
That’s the Final Answer, Junior,
And someday you’ll see the light.

* * *

Lord, your Holy Word exposes,
Scholars dodging what is plain,
Yes, declaring “There’s no purpose!”
While intelligence is feigned.

Common sense we have abandoned,
Swearing pointless origin,
In the process demonstrating
Our true nature…that of Sin.

Father, help us see the darkness,
Help us see that we are lost.
Give us Grace at last to fathom,
Why the Son rose to the Cross.

Lord, we live in a fallen, broken world. Give us the grace to recognize the rebel within us. Help us to recognize our own fallen, Self-ishly defiant, deceived, and unholy nature. Help us to recognize the attitude of Steven Weinberg within ourselves, and when we do, may we have faith and wisdom enough to turn and submit that defiant nature and attitude to You for correction, healing and salvation. Help us to honestly and sincerely confess our sin before you, Father. Please sanctify our hearts and minds and actions for our benefit and for your Glory. May your will be done in us and through us…Father, call us home in Jesus’ name.

“Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.”
—1Corinthians 1: 20-21
