Christ Our Perfect Mediator

Tom Graffagnino in Christmas, Hebrews, New Covenant, go-between, mediator

In his letter to the Galatians (v. 3:19), the Apostle Paul tells us that the Mosaic Law was mediated by angelic beings:

“[The Law]… was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.”

Moses receives the Law on Mt. Sinai

The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews (possibly the Apostle Paul, as well) makes the point that one individual far greater than the angelic ministering spirits had appeared in the fullness of time. This promised One…(his name: “Son”)…had accomplished much more than any servant spirit had previously done inside the “household” of Moses. This particular new arrival was, indeed, God’s firstborn (ie., with all the rights of heirship). He had come to provide a New Covenant, and would (rightfully) inherit all that belonged to the Father.

The writer to the Hebrews put it this way:

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son [a name], whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name [‘Son’] he has inherited is superior to theirs.” –Hebrews 1:1-4

Emmanuel, “Son”, the Seed of Promise, and rightful Heir of Glory, the long-awaited Messiah had arrived just as the Hebrew prophets had foretold! And in this regard , the services of the angelic ministering spirits, would no longer be required.

The perfect Mediator, Deity in flesh, had arrived and accomplished the Father’s will. This greater Son of David had first appeared inauspiciously in Bethlehem wrapped in swaddling clothes….
