Did Some Leave There Deeply Mourning?

When Jesus climbed the cross for you and me, He cried out these familiar, heart-wrenching words… “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) “
—(Matthew 27:46)

Most of those who surrounded Jesus that dark day on Calvary, would have recognized those words from the Holy Scriptures. They were the opening words of Psalm 221… (a Psalm of David)….a sacred, prophetic, foreshadowing of their long-awaited Messiah.

We can only imagine what they must have thought as they watched this “wretched criminal” die before their very eyes ...

Did Some Leave There Deeply Mourning?

Do you think they may have heard you
When You cried from Calv’ry’s tree…
“My God!...Why hast thou forsaken2…?”
Were some shaken?...Could they see?

Did they understand the message
You imparted there at the last?
Did they catch the implication?
Were, perhaps, some left aghast?

Had they sung the Psalms of David?
Did they know Psalm Twenty-Two?
Do you think that they were shaken
By those words You know they knew?

Did they really fully fathom
What You uttered then and there?
Did they recognize the scripture?
Did the dogs around you stare3?

Did King David’s revelation
Cut them deeply… like a Sword4?
When they saw You there in anguish,
Did the Spirit strike a chord?

Do you think that seed you scattered
Fell on hardened hearts of stone5?
Did some read between the lines, Lord?
Had the Sword been sharply honed?

Did some leave there deeply mourning?
Did it dawn on them at all?
Did they, Lord, remain in darkness6
With the writing on the wall7?

Did some know that Psalm completely?
Had they read it to the end?
Did they make, Lord, that connection?
Did some finally comprehend?
