It's the Grimm Dark Place We Hide In

After his conversion to Christianity, journalist, author and cultural commentator, Malcolm Muggeridge, noted that….
“The depravity of man is at once the most empirically verifiable reality but at the same time the most intellectually resisted fact.”

A statement like this, of course, rubs the world the wrong way. Spiritual truth has a way of doing that to “the natural [fallen] man”. The very thought of “original sin” is anathema today, and it always has been. But it is especially the case today.

We react to the notion like Count Dracula reacted to the light of dawn…. and to the Cross. It meets with fierce resistance.

It's the Grimm Dark Place We Hide In

It’s the fact we’re all resisting,
Truth we battle tooth and nail.
We would rather trust our “safe place”,
(Mankind’s favorite Fairy Tale.)

It’s the Grimm, dark place we hide in,
It’s The Lie we wish were true.
It’s the Sin we’d rather die for.
And it’s really nothing new.

It’s the fact we’re all resisting,
Truth we battle tooth and nail.
We would rather trust our “safe place”,
(Mankind’s favorite Fairy Tale).

It's The Fall that Humpty scoffed at
In his dim lit Wonderland...
It's the lure of Humanism.
And the quicksand where we stand.

It's the place the blind retreat to,
It's the Lie we wish were true.
It’s the Sin we’d rather die for.
And it’s really nothing new.

It’s the broad way we would kill for,
It’s the swamp we’re sinking in.
It’s the nighttime no one’s mourning.
And the reason Satan grins.

If we read the Book of Romans,
Chapter Three might help us see
There the problem’s spelled out plainly
Both for you and, yes, for me.

Please read verses nine through twenty…
(Let them marinate a while.)
Truth like that today’s “Verboten!”
Truth like that’s gone out of style!

Don’t stop there, though….Keep on reading!
(There’s a dawn…“Here comes the sun!”)
There’s a Morningstar arising
Starting with verse twenty-one…..

"Here comes the Son..."

“What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.”
“Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.”
“The poison of vipers is on their lilps.”
“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and misery mark their ways,
and the way of peace they do not know.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”
—Romans 3: 9-20

"It isn't that they can't see the solution, it is that they can't see the problem."
—GK Chesterton
